View Full Version : Thrush
I apologise in advance if this gets a bit too graphic for a public forum :p
I've had some itching, dryness and burning for the past couple of days. This morning I woke up and the itching was really bad. I put some clotrimazole cream on (its the same as canesten according to the woman in the chemist last week) and that seemed to sooth it a bit.
My symptoms have gotten worse through the day (y'know, typical thrush) and now the itchyness is driving me crazy.
I don't know if it is the cream has made it worse or if it naturally got worse :hmm:
So this is my question: what can I do until Monday when the chemist is open? Morrisons here doesn't have a pharmacy so I definitely can't get anything medicinal. No live yoghurt either.
I'm hoping the more experienced members on here will have some suggestions. I've not had thrush before and it's driving me crazy. How long does it typically last?

I got Canestan Cream from the chemist but my best advice is natural yogurt or garlic (i know both might be disgusting but they work)
Thanks Tammy. I have neither of those though :(
I had it once but got medical treatment fairly quickly, it was many years ago. With the treatment it did not last long, maybe a week. Can be caused by anti biotics strangely enough. I can only think of yoghurt, get to a supermarket pronto, my dear. :)
You need internal pessaries - not just the external cream. That or the new oral capsule.
You can buy over the counter at any pharmacy or v cheap online, which I've done in order to have a stock of the pill and the cream as I get recurrent bouts.
You can use a cold flannel to aleviate the burning, cool baths also. One cause, as Peridita said, is antibiotics, another is wearing too tight clothing down there which causes the natural organisms to multiply causing thrush.
I've found a cold flannel to be very soothing - keep using the cream though as it will help aswell.
Hope it eases soon - its another one of those curses us females have been given I think x
Thanks :)
I bought some yoghurt today so I'll try it after I've had a shower. Sand and yoghurt don't mix and sitting on the beach doesn't help either.
I'll go to the chemist tomorrow and get the tablet.
Thanks :)

i used to suffer quite badly with this.
The best thing you can do other than use the medicated treament it when washing youself dont use anything but warm water. If you do this for a couple of days you will notice a massive difference. I hardly ever get it now since i started doing this. If you feel you need to freshen up just use a fremfresh wipe.
Best advice the doc ever gave me.
I've just seen an advert on tv for Vagasil cream. Is it any good? Is it the same as canesten but cheaper?

I think I need to dig this thread up again... :(
Was just wondering what Thrush actually is.. and what can cause it?
I've been getting the symptoms Abigail had and I'm losing sleep over it.. I cannot get confortable and I also feel reallly self consciouss (sp?) about it too.
Vaginal thrush, also called yeast infection or candidiasis, is an overgrowth of yeast that leads to a range of unpleasant symptoms, such as itching and soreness around the vagina. Most women will have thrush at least once during their lives, and many will have more than one episode. But for some women, thrush keeps coming back. Recurrent thrush can affect a woman’s sex life and self-image, and may be a sign of a more serious health problem. Even if you only have thrush once, it can be extremely uncomfortable. And, if you don’t know what is happening or why, it can also be very stressful. This online leaflet explains what thrush is, what causes it, how to treat it and what you can do to help prevent it in the future.
Thrush is caused by yeast, already present in the body, which grows out of control. This yeast is almost always Candida albicans, but another, more resistant yeast, Candida glabrata, can also lead to thrush.
Many women, (as well as men and children) carry yeast in and on their bodies without any problems. Yeast usually lives in the intestines, vagina, mouth and skin, where ‘friendly’ bacteria help keep yeast levels low. When this balance is disrupted, however, and the yeast is allowed to grow unchecked, it causes havoc in the body.
The vagina is one of the areas most likely to be affected by thrush. Although the vagina is generally too acidic for yeast to grow out of control, it is sensitive to small changes and can easily become an ideal environment for yeast to flourish. Too much yeast irritates the vaginal tissues and this leads to the typical symptoms of thrush.
Aloe Vera Gel or Melaleuca Oil can help

Itching and burning
These are the most common symptoms of thrush and often the most distressing. Burning and itching can be so intense it is difficult to resist scratching, but scratching will only make the problem worse.
Soreness, swelling and pain
Thrush irritates the delicate tissue of the vagina and genital area, making it sore, swollen and red. As a result, it may be painful to urinate (urine will sting the inflamed tissue). It may also be painful to have sex. In some cases, anything that touches or rubs the area, including sitting and walking, can be painful.
Discharge
Discharge caused by thrush is usually (but not always) white and thicker than a woman’s regular discharge. The ‘typical’ discharge linked to thrush is yoghurt-like in appearance and smells strongly of yeast. Some women, however, have a watery or mild-smelling discharge. The amount can also vary from a little to a lot.

I'm having mild infections after my period every month. Not sure if its related. Its nowhere near as bad as the first time though.

Thankyou for the info :)
Funny you should say that, because I came on today. I kind of gathered this is what I ahve, so I bought that Vagisil stiuff..a nd I'm taking Cystopurin? ]
Anywayss, I'm now even mopre uncomfortable because of these damn sanitary towels, but was wondering if maybe tampons would be better? Sorry for the graphic details.. I jsut don't know what to do and want it gone as quick as possible! :(
Cystopurin is for cystitis, an infection in the bladder, so won't do anything for thrush.
I used clotrimazole cream on the outside and natural yoghurt inside. I cannot describe the relief the yoghurt brought. Put it in the fridge so its really cold before you use it.
I wouldn't know about towels and tampons as I use a moon cup and have for over a year.

I told my Nan Cystopurin wouldn't work!
Do you eat the yoghurt? I looked for live yopghurt earlier but couldn't find any.
Oohhh right ok no worries on that one then lol, I've bought both, so I'll give both a try and see if one is more bearable than the other.
Put the yoghurt on a tampon. Fiddly but brings lots of relief.
It needs to be live yohgurt with bacteria in it. Its usually with the big pots of yoghurt like Onken and the organic stuff.

I have a doctors appointment in a bit. I hope they can give me somethign for it. It's getting me down big time now. I'm nervous though :/
Did you go to the doctors Kirsty?
I have it again. Not sure if this is significant or an indicator of anything, but I've had thrush every month since June. Nothing as bad as the first time but it's still not nice.
I've switched to cotton underwear, wear loose fitting trousers when I'm at home (i.e. not jeans) and make sure I dry thoroughly but I'm still getting thrush :(
Do I need to tell my friend to wash his bath towels that I used over the weekend? Can it be transferred through sharing towels? I know we should have had separate ones but he's just moved house and hasn't unpacked properly.
Eat more plain yoghurt and cover your bits with the yoghurt too. You should find that it reduces the symptoms in next to no time. I have never heard of it being passed through sharing towels. More info here:

I did go to the doctors Abigail, and my doctor could see how much distress I was in over it so gave me canasten, a tablet, and a pessarie.
However, I keep getting it every month too... not as bad just liek you, but it's annoying this month, and I can't seem to shift it.
Definately go to your doctor and explain how it's affecting you, they will help all they can
Thanks guys. I'll make an appointment this week. I'm fed up of having it and being itchy. It's really not a nice feeling.
Kirsty, did the doctor examine you or take a swab?

No, but I only went once, the first time I had it. They may take one from you though if you go again?
Some women are susceptible to having thrush every month for a while though - I know I was for a long time and still keep a thrush tablet and cream in the cupboard just in case. Sometimes, just your natural cycle has you producing lots of yeast etc and away you go. Thing is getting to notice when the symptoms are first starting and to hit it quickly before it gets too bad.
I'm sorry if this post gets a bit too graphic.
I noticed that it was starting a day or so after my period finished. I thought it could maybe be the mooncup I used so I used tampons this month and I didn't get it as bad.
It seems to be worse at night, very sore and itchy, or when I'm sat for a long time.
Is there a cheaper form of cannesten that works just as well?
I have found generic versions of both the oral tablet and of the cream that work just as well, if not better than Canestan. I've found the tablet to be £1.99 in one place (a little while back this was though).
Through the night and when you are sat for a while, tends to warm you up a bit if you see what I mean, and that exacerbates the problem.
Funny you should say about the mooncup though, as I found I improved massively once I made the switch to mine.
I also know of a lot of women that are badly affected if they use Always.

i had to switch from always, as i was raw by the end!!!! before i had aimee the always silk actually improved it a bit but now nope cannot use them at all. In fact any brands by end of period im sore and itchy!!! Seriously considering the mooncup for when i need next.
I had no problems with the mooncup until I got thrush the first time. Maybe there's some bacteria still on it and that's why I get recurrent infections :hmm:
I'll have a look when I go to the chemist and see what they have. I'm not keen on spending £11 on a tablet and some cream if there are cheaper alternatives.

It's not cystitis, the problem isn't in my bladder or urethra.
Both Lloyds pharmacy and Morrisons pharmacy local to me do generic versions of the cannestan pessaries, creams and oral tablets.
It is really common for thrush to be associated with menstruation. I have found that I don't get it anywhere like as frequently since I had a hysterectomy. I sorry that that doesn't help.

I know this might sound like I'm telling to you to suck eggs, but have you boil washed it (ie, pan of boiling water for 5 mins)? If there is any bacteria on there, this should kill them off.
I usually stick in a cup of hot water for a few minutes. Might have to boil it during the night when my flatmates aren't around to ask questions :ninja:

Might be worth a try - the boiling temperature and keeping it simmering for a short time will help hopefully.

I went back to to the doctors again and he gave me the prescription again, but alos said that it could've been caused by the antibiotics I was taking for my water infection. However, he said that if it comes back again.. I have to go back to the doctors but to be prepared as I will probably be given an internal. :(

As soon as I'm taking antibiotics I get a flare up as it messes with my normal balances. Its very common.
The internal, they'd probably take a swab and make sure theres no other infection there, just the yeast imbalance causing the thrush (which is very common). Don't panic about it though - its not as bad as it seems x
getting this severe lately i think from diabetes high sugar, im a devil, any tips?
